CAREERSOURCE BROWARD AND CAREERSOURCE SOUTH FLORIDA SECURE MORE THAN $3.3 MILLION FOR REGIONAL RESPONSE TO SPIRIT AIRLINES CLOSURE

Federal funding will expand employment opportunities, training, and supportive services for displaced workers across South Florida

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – October 5, 2026 – CareerSource Broward (CSBD) and CareerSource South Florida (CSSF) have been awarded a combined $3,361,178 in National Dislocated Worker Grant funding to support workers impacted by the closure of Spirit Airlines. The funding, awarded from the U.S. Department of Labor through FloridaCommerce, will expand access to employment services, career training, and other workforce resources for affected workers. The investment will support a coordinated regional response across Broward and Miami-Dade counties, helping dislocated workers connect with new employment opportunities and transition into in-demand careers.

"This significant regional investment enables us to continue working directly with former Spirit employees and other impacted workers as they move toward their next career opportunity," said Carol Hylton, President/CEO of CareerSource Broward. "By working together across county lines, we can expand access to services and help workers connect with opportunities throughout South Florida."

The regional investment includes $2,004,217 awarded to CareerSource Broward and $1,356,961 awarded to CareerSource South Florida. The award is part of a statewide Employment Recovery grant.

"This grant strengthens our ability to support workers while working collaboratively with our workforce partners in Broward County," said Rick Beasley, Executive Director of CareerSource South Florida. "By coordinating our resources across the region, we can connect workers to training, employers, and careers that can help them build a path toward long-term employment.”

To assist Spirit's former employees who live and work throughout South Florida, CareerSource Broward and CareerSource South Florida are working together to ensure workers can access the support they need, regardless of where they previously worked. Through this regional approach, eligible workers can receive employment, training, and career services at the CareerSource location most convenient to them.

The two agencies will draw on their combined employer networks to connect workers with opportunities, including in aviation, aerospace, logistics, and related industries at and around Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport.

Funding can be used for career services, employer outreach, job matching, targeted job fairs, reemployment assistance, occupational skills training, supporting services, and work-based learning, such as On-the-Job Training and Registered Apprenticeships.

Workers affected by the Spirit Airlines closure can access services through either organization:
