CareerSource Broward Receives Grant from the Florida Department of Commerce to Support Non-Custodial Parents

Ft. Lauderdale, FL – October 31, 2023 – CareerSource Broward (CSBD), Broward County’s workforce development agency and administrative entity for the Broward Workforce Development Board and the CSBD Council of Elected Officials, recently received a $772,447.00 grant from the Florida Department of Commerce (FloridaCommerce) to support their Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program.

This grant will enhance services to non-custodial parents who are having difficulty paying their child support or are in arrears in paying their child support obligations and to retain self-sufficient employment. The goal of the program is to provide individuals with employability skills, financial literacy education, support services, training, paid work experience and job placement.

“CareerSource Broward provides workforce development solutions for the approximately two million residents of Broward County, and works to remove barriers for the community members that may be economically disadvantaged,” says Carol Hylton, President and CEO of CSBD. “This grant will allow us to support marginalized communities and assist non-custodial parents who are unemployed and underemployed to access the training, support, and case management services needed to realize a livable wage, which will enable them to fulfill their child support obligations.”

In Broward County, there are many non-custodial parents with child support arrearages and support orders larger than can be reasonably managed. Consequently, many families remain on public assistance, and numerous non-custodial parents need help to become more self-sufficient to provide support for their children.

To bridge this gap, CSBD will use the funds from this grant to connect this population with more meaningful, long-lasting employment opportunities.
