Scholarships Available For Broward Residents Seeking Occupational Training

May 3, 2017

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – May 3, 2017 – Broward County residents seeking financial assistance for occupational training may be eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $8,200 through CareerSource Broward’s Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) program.

According to the Pew Research Center, more than half of adults in the labor force say it will be essential for them to get training and develop new skills in the future in order to keep up with changes in the workplace. To address this issue, CareerSource Broward is offering financial scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition, books, uniforms and supplies while individuals receive the education and training they need to get hired in a high-wage occupational career field, including information technology, construction, healthcare, manufacturing and more.

Last year, more than 850 Broward County residents received a scholarship to help pay for their occupational training and were given access to a variety of resources and workshops to assist with direct job placements, resume writing, interview skills, employment readiness and career guidance.

"We recognize that it can become very expensive when trying to further your education or upgrade the skills needed to become competitive in today’s workforce,” said Mason C. Jackson, President/CEO of CareerSource Broward. “These scholarships not only give individuals the opportunity to pursue careers in industries that are facing serious skilled labor shortages, but also helps create a pipeline of trained and qualified workers for companies to tap in to when looking to hire in Broward County.”

Scholarships are awarded based on applicant suitability, eligibility and the availability of funds and can only be used at CareerSource Broward approved training providers, which include public educational institutions, technical colleges or private vocational schools. Applicants must be a Broward County resident, 18 years or older and meet U.S. citizen or permanent resident requirements. Veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
