Hurricane Relief Funds Available To Help Repair, Replace Medical Devices

May 8, 2018

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – May 8, 2018 – Today, CareerSource Broward announced that it received more than $950,000 in grant funding to help individuals currently living in Florida cover the cost of repairing or replacing medical devices that were damaged or destroyed due to Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Maria. Specifically, the grant – which was awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor – will be used to provide financial assistance to individuals with disabilities or physical impairments who were impacted by the two storms.

Cissy Proctor, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, said, “The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is pleased to partner with the network of local CareerSource boards to support Floridians, especially those in our hardest hit communities as they recover from Hurricanes Irma and Maria’s devastating impacts. These funds will allow individuals to repair their essential medical devices so that they can get back to work.”

Medical equipment covered under the grant includes wheelchairs, hearing aids, artificial limbs, glasses and more. Individuals seeking financial assistance must have: (a) resided in parts of Florida that were impacted by Hurricane Irma or (b) resided in Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands at the time of Hurricane Maria. Financial assistance will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and individuals will be required to complete an eligibility application.

“As additional recovery efforts from the last year’s hurricane season continue to take place throughout the state, we can’t forget about those who lost much-needed medical supplies due to the storms,” said Mason C. Jackson, President/CEO of CareerSource Broward. “This collaborative effort will allow us to assist those with disabilities who may be struggling to replace those medical items that can ultimately affect their employment status, health and quality of life.”
