Broward County September 2021 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's September 2021 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 4.4 percent in September 2021. This rate was 3.3 percentage points lower than the region's year-ago rate of 7.7 percent. The labor force was 1,055,549, up 47,532 (+4.7 percent) over the year. There were 46,144 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In September 2021 nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was 827,800, an increase of 31,300 jobs (+3.9 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+16,100 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+5,600 jobs); education and health services (+3,200 jobs); construction (+3,600 jobs); other services (+3,000 jobs); professional and business services (+600 jobs); manufacturing (+500 jobs); and information (+400 jobs).

Palm Beach County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 4.1 percent in September 2021. This rate was 2.5 percentage points lower than the region's year-ago rate of 6.1 percent. The region's September 2021 unemployment rate was 0.2 percentage point below the state rate of 4.3 percent. The labor force was 751,806, up 43,294 (+6.1 percent) over the year. There were 31,018 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In September 2021 nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach Metro Division was 622,000, an increase of 26,500 jobs (+4.5 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+12,200 jobs); professional and business services (+4,800 jobs); education and health services (+4,000 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+3,200 jobs); construction (+2,300 jobs); other services (+1,500 jobs); manufacturing (+700 jobs); financial activities (+500 jobs); and information (+500 jobs).

Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 5.5 percent in September 2021. This rate was 6.9 percentage points lower than the region's year-ago rate of 12.4 percent. The labor force was 1,413,676, up 18,094 (+1.3 percent) over the year. There were 78,354 unemployed residents in the region.
  • Monroe County had the lowest unemployment rate (2.6 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region followed by Miami-Dade County (5.6 percent).
  • In September 2021 nonagricultural employment in the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall Metropolitan Division was 1,163,600, an increase of 61,400 jobs (+5.6 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+24,000 jobs); professional and business services (+17,600 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+10,800 jobs); financial activities (+4,600 jobs); other services (+4,300 jobs); education and health services (+1,400 jobs); manufacturing (+900 jobs); and information (+200 jobs).

State of Florida Unemployment Data

  • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in September 2021, down 0.1 percentage point from the August 2021 rate, and down 2.3 percentage points from a year ago. There were 517,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,593,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in September.
  • Florida lost 1,269,200 jobs from February to April 2020 and has since gained back 83.8 percent of the jobs lost (+1,063,800 jobs).
  • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,866,700 in September 2021, an increase of 84,500 jobs (+1.0 percent) over the month. The state gained 405,900 jobs over the year, an increase of 4.8 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 4.0 percent over the year.
  • The September 2021 total nonagricultural employment has not reached the pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.
