Broward County May 2022 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's May 2022 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 2.5 percent in May 2022. This rate was 2.6 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 5.1 percent. The Region's May 2022 unemployment rate was 0.0 percentage point above the state rate of 2.5 percent. The labor force was 1,055,691, up 29,821 (+2.9 percent) over the year. There were 26,816 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In May 2022 nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was 871,700, an increase of 33,400 jobs (+4.0 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were trade, transportation, and utilities (+8,800 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+9,300 jobs); professional and business services (+9,500 jobs); financial activities (+3,100 jobs); information (+1,400 jobs); manufacturing (+1,500 jobs); other services (+1,500 jobs); construction (+700 jobs); and government (+400 jobs).

Palm Beach County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 2.4 percent in May 2022. This rate was 1.9 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 4.3 percent. The region's May 2022 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage points below the state rate of 2.5 percent. The labor force was 762,719 up 30,621 (+4.2 percent) over the year. There were 18,374 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In May 2022 nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach Metro Division was 663,800, an increase of 31,600 jobs (+5.0 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+10,300 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+6,600 jobs); professional and business services (+2,600 jobs); financial activities (+2,000 jobs); education and health services (+3,500 jobs); other services (+3,000 jobs); construction (+1,000 jobs); manufacturing (+1,000 jobs); information (+600 jobs); and government (+1,000 jobs).

    Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties

    • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 2.3 percent in May 2022. This rate was 3.2 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 5.5 percent. The region's May 2022 unemployment rate was 0.2 percentage points lower than the state rate of 2.5 percent. The labor force was 1,372,990, up 21,178 (+1.6 percent) over the year. There were 31,528 unemployed residents in the region.
    • Monroe County had the lowest unemployment rate (1.5 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region, followed by Miami-Dade County (2.3 percent).
    • In May 2022 nonagricultural employment in the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall Metropolitan Division was 1,241,500, an increase of 75,300 jobs (+6.5 percent) over the year.
    • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were trade, transportation, and utilities (+23,700 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+19,100 jobs); professional and business services (+12,500 jobs); education and health services (+8,400 jobs); financial activities (+2,600 jobs); manufacturing (+4,000 jobs); other services (+2,500 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+2,000 jobs); and information (+1,100 jobs).

    State of Florida Unemployment Data

    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.0 percent in May 2022, unchanged from the April 2022 rate, and down 1.9 percentage points from a year ago. There were 313,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,592,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in May.
    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 9,299,100 in May 2022, an increase of 11,200 jobs (+0.1 percent) over the month. The state gained 468,100 jobs over the year, an increase of 5.3 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 4.5 percent over the year.
    • Florida’s total nonagricultural and private sector employment surpassed the February 2020 (pre-pandemic) level in October 2021 and labor force surpassed the February 2020 level in June 2021.
    • Florida lost 1,282,500 jobs from February to April 2020 and has since gained back all jobs lost (+1,506,100 jobs).
