Broward County January 2022 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's January 2022 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 3.6 percent in January 2022. This rate was 3.2 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 5.8 percent. The region's January 2022 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point above the state rate of 3.5 percent. The labor force was 1,048,504, up 37,916 (+3.8 percent) over the year. There were 38,208 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In January 2022 nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was 864,600, an increase of 44,100 jobs (+5.4 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+14,000 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+9,900 jobs); professional and business services (+9,900 jobs); financial activities (+3,300 jobs); information (+2,200 jobs); education and health services (+1,500 jobs); other services (+1,200 jobs); manufacturing (+900 jobs); construction (+700 jobs); and government (+500 jobs).

Palm Beach County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 3.4 percent in January 2022. This rate was 2.4 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 5.8 percent. The region's January 2022 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point below the state rate of 3.5 percent. The labor force was 747,040, up 29,507 (+4.1 percent) over the year. There were 25,333 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In January 2022 nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach Metro Division was 647,600, an increase of 30,700 jobs (+5.0 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+11,100 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+6,700 jobs); professional and business services (+4,100 jobs); financial activities (+2,400 jobs); construction (+1,400 jobs); education and health services (+1,400 jobs); information (+1,300 jobs); other services (+1,200 jobs); manufacturing (+800 jobs); and government (+300 jobs).

    Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties

    • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 3.1 percent in January 2022. This rate was 3.9 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 7.0 percent. The region's January 2022 unemployment rate was 0.4 percentage point lower than the state rate of 3.5 percent. The labor force was 1,381,276, up 41,163 (+3.1 percent) over the year. There were 43,189 unemployed residents in the region.
    • Monroe County had the lowest unemployment rate (2.3 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region followed by Miami-Dade County (3.2 percent).
    • In January 2022 nonagricultural employment in the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall Metropolitan Division was 1,216,400, an increase of 78,700 jobs (+6.9 percent) over the year.
    • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+24,800 jobs); professional and business services (+21,500 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+15,800 jobs); education and health services (+6,400 jobs); financial activities (+5,500 jobs); other services (+2,700 jobs); information (+1,500 jobs); and manufacturing (+800 jobs).

    State of Florida Unemployment Data

    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in January 2022, unchanged from the revised December 2021 rate, and down 2.5 percentage points from a year ago. There were 364,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,448,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.0 percent in January.
    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 9,163,800 in January 2022, an increase of 25,300 jobs (+0.3 percent) over the month. The state gained 504,000 jobs over the year, an increase of 5.8 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 4.7 percent over the year.
    • With the release of revised historical data, we now know that the state of Florida surpassed pre-pandemic total nonagricultural job growth in October 2021 and that the state’s labor force exceeded the pre-pandemic level in June 2021, one month earlier than previously reported.
    • Florida lost 1,282,500 jobs from February to April 2020 and has since gained back all jobs lost (+1,370,800 jobs).
    • The number of jobs in Florida reached a new record level of 9,163,800 in January 2022, up 504,000 jobs compared to a year ago. All ten major industries experienced positive over-the-year job growth in January
