Broward County December 2021 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's December 2021 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 3.6 percent in December 2021. This rate was 0.6 percentage point lower than the region's year-ago rate of 4.2 percent. The region's December 2021 unemployment rate was 0.4 percentage point above the state rate of 3.2 percent. The labor force was 1,055,251, up 65,765 (+6.6 percent) over the year. There were 38,152 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In December 2021 nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was 851,300, an increase of 36,000 jobs (+4.4 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+13,000 jobs); education and health services (+6,700 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+5,600 jobs); professional and business services (+4,500 jobs); construction (+3,300 jobs); other services (+1,800 jobs); information (+700 jobs); manufacturing (+500 jobs); and government (+400 jobs).

Palm Beach County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 3.3 percent in December 2021. This rate was 0.2 percentage point lower than the region's year ago rate of 3.5 percent. The region's December 2021 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point above the state rate of 3.2 percent. The labor force was 760,237, up 49,612 (+7.0 percent) over the year. There were 25,223 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In December 2021 nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach Metro Division was 647,000, an increase of 28,400 jobs (+4.6 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+9,800 jobs); education and health services (+5,100 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+4,900 jobs); professional and business services (+4,000 jobs); construction (+2,200 jobs); other services (+1,600 jobs); financial activities (+1,300 jobs); manufacturing (+700 jobs); and information (+500 jobs).

    Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties

    • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 1.4 percent in December 2021. This rate was 6.4 percentage points lower than the region's year-ago rate of 7.8 percent. The region's December 2021 unemployment rate was 1.8 percentage points lower than the state rate of 3.2 percent. The labor force was 1,367,589, up 21,749 (+1.6 percent) over the year. There were 18,896 unemployed residents in the region.
    • Miami-Dade County had the lowest unemployment rate (1.4 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region followed by Monroe County (2.1 percent).
    • In December 2021 nonagricultural employment in the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall Metropolitan Division was 1,205,000, an increase of 68,000 jobs (+6.0 percent) over the year.
    • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were professional and business services (+24,000 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+17,800 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+17,100 jobs); other services (+5,000 jobs); government (+3,500 jobs); financial activities (+1,700 jobs); manufacturing (+500 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+400 jobs); and information (+300 jobs).

    State of Florida Unemployment Data

    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in December 2021, down 0.1 percentage point from the November 2021 rate, and down 0.7 percentage point from a year ago. There were 466,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,660,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.9 percent in December.
    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,971,300 in December 2021, an increase of 11,700 jobs (+0.1 percent) over the month. The state gained 479,300 jobs over the year, an increase of 5.6 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 4.5 percent over the year.
    • The December 2021 total nonagricultural employment has not reached the pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.
