Broward County December 2020 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's December 2020 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 6.6 percent in December 2020. This rate was 4.0 percentage point higher than the region's year ago rate of 2.6 percent. The labor force was 1,007,605, down 34,899 (-3.3) over the year. There were 66,482 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In December 2020 nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Bch-Deerfield Bch Metro Division was 812,800, a decrease of 63,200 jobs (-7.2 percent) over the year.
  • The industry gaining in jobs over the year was financial activities (+600 jobs). The leisure and hospitality (-23,400 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (-9,400 jobs); professional and business services (-8,700 jobs); education and health services (-8,700 jobs); construction (-5,100 jobs); government (-3,100 jobs); other services (-2,000 jobs); information (-1,800 jobs); and manufacturing (-1,600 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year.

Palm Beach County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 5.5 percent in December 2020. This rate was 2.8 percentage point higher than the region's year ago rate of 2.7 percent. The region's December 2020 unemployment rate was 0.3 percentage point lower than the state rate of 5.8 percent. The labor force was 707,961, down 27,275 (-3.7) over the year. There were 38,662 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In December 2020 nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Bch-Boca Raton-Delray Bch Metro Division was 610,100, a decrease of 38,900 jobs (-6.0 percent) over the year.
  • The industry gaining in jobs over the year was construction (+600 jobs). The leisure and hospitality (-17,200 jobs); education and health services (-5,800 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (-4,300 jobs); professional and business services (-4,200 jobs); government (-3,600 jobs); other services (-2,200 jobs); information (-1,100 jobs); financial activities (-600 jobs); and manufacturing (-500 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year.

Miami-Dade/Monroe

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 7.2 percent in December 2020. This rate was 5.6 percentage point higher than the region's year ago rate of 1.6 percent. The labor force was 1,361,990, down 78,737 (-5.5) over the year. There were 98,194 unemployed residents in the region.
  • Monroe County had the lowest unemployment rate (3.8 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region followed by Miami-Dade County (7.3 percent).
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were financial activities (+1,500 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+1,100 jobs); and manufacturing (+300 jobs). The leisure and hospitality (-24,100 jobs); government (-15,200 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (-13,300 jobs); education and health services (-10,600 jobs); other services (-4,100 jobs); professional and business services (-3,900 jobs); and information (-900 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year.

State of Florida Unemployment Data

  • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in December 2020, down 0.2 percentage point from the revised November 2020 rate, and up 3.2 percentage points from a year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in December.
  • There were 614,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,143,000.
  • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,612,200 in December 2020, an increase of 16,800 jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. The state lost 419,200 jobs over the year, a decrease of 4.6 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs fell 6.2 percent over the year. 
  • December labor statistics reflect the continued effects of COVID-19 and the efforts to reopen businesses and services.
