Broward County August 2022 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's August 2022 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County¹

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 2.8 percent in August 2022. This rate was 2.0 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 4.8 percent. The region's August 2022 unemployment rate was equal to the state rate of 2.8 percent. The labor force was 1,077,924, up 41,150 (+4.0 percent) over the year. There were 30,396 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In August 2022, nonagricultural employment in the Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach MD was 887,000, an increase of 39,200 jobs (+4.6 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining jobs over the year were Professional and Business Services (+12,300 jobs); Leisure and Hospitality (+8,200 jobs); Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+6,100 jobs); Education and Health Services (+5,300 jobs); Construction (+2,500 jobs); Financial Activities (+1,900 jobs); Other Services (+1,300 jobs); Manufacturing (+1,000 jobs); Information (+400 jobs); and Government (+200 jobs).

Palm Beach County¹

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 2.9 percent in August 2022. This rate was 1.5 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 4.4 percent. The region's August 2022 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point above the state rate of 2.8 percent. The labor force was 769,734, up 32,049 (+4.3 percent) over the year. There were 22,020 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In August 2022, nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach MD was 668,400, an increase of 31,400 jobs (+4.9 percent) over the year
  • The industries gaining jobs over the year were Leisure and Hospitality (+10,900 jobs); Education and Health Services (+6,000 jobs); Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+5,100 jobs); Other Services (+5,100 jobs); Construction (+1,200 jobs); Manufacturing (+1,100 jobs); Financial Activities (+1,000 jobs); Government (+800 jobs); and Professional and Business Services (+200 jobs).

    Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties¹

    • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 2.3 percent in August 2022. This rate was 2.7 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 5.0 percent. The region's August 2022 unemployment rate was 0.5 percentage point lower than the state rate of 2.8 percent. The labor force was 1,386,679, up 32,323 (+2.4 percent) over the year. There were 31,423 unemployed residents in the region.
    • Monroe County had the lowest unemployment rate (1.7 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region followed by Miami-Dade County (2.3 percent).
    • In August 2022, nonagricultural employment in the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall MD was 1,267,300, an increase of 80,400 jobs (+6.8 percent) over the year.
    • The industries gaining jobs over the year were Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+26,200 jobs); Leisure and Hospitality (+15,700 jobs); Education and Health Services (+12,000 jobs);Professional and Business Services (+11,900 jobs); Manufacturing (+5,100 jobs); Financial Activities (+4,900 jobs); Other Services (+4,600 jobs); and Mining, Logging, and Construction (+2,200 jobs).

    State of Florida Unemployment Data

    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.7 percent in August 2022, no change from the July 2022 rate, and down 1.6 percentage pointsfrom a year ago. There were 293,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,706,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.7 percent in August.
    • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 9,447,400 in August 2022, an increase of 20,700 jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. The state gained 443,600 jobs over the year, an increase of 4.9 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 4.0 percent over the year.
    • Florida’s total nonagricultural and private sector employment surpassed the February 2020 (pre-pandemic) level in October 2021 and labor force surpassed the February 2020 level in June 2021.
    • Florida lost 1,282,500 jobs from February to April 2020 and has since gained back all jobs lost (+1,654,400 jobs).
