Broward County August 2021 Unemployment Data

Below is the latest data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for Broward County's August 2021 unemployment rate. Also included is information for the South Florida area.

Broward County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Broward region (Broward County) was 4.9 percent in August 2021. This rate was 4.6 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 9.5 percent. The region's August 2021 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point lower than the state rate of 5.0 percent. The labor force was 1,054,310, up 46,437 (+4.6 percent) over the year. There were 51,894 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In August 2021 nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was 823,100, an increase of 29,800 jobs (+3.8 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+16,200 jobs); education and health services (+5,000 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+4,000 jobs); other services (+3,400 jobs); construction (+1,900 jobs); information (+400 jobs); manufacturing (+200 jobs); and financial activities (+100 jobs).

Palm Beach County

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Palm Beach County region (Palm Beach County) was 4.7 percent in August 2021. This rate was 3.4 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 8.1 percent. The region's August 2021 unemployment rate was 0.3 percentage point lower than the state rate of 5.0 percent. The labor force was 756,565, up 54,964 (+7.8 percent) over the year. There were 35,320 unemployed residents in the region.
  • In August 2021 nonagricultural employment in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach Metro Division was 623,900, an increase of 36,100 jobs (+6.1 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+14,200 jobs); education and health services (+7,000 jobs); professional and business services (+4,600 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+3,400 jobs); government (+2,100 jobs); other services (+1,800 jobs); construction (+1,200 jobs); manufacturing (+700 jobs); financial activities (+600 jobs); and information (+500 jobs).

Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties

  • The unemployment rate in the CareerSource South Florida region (Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) was 6.5 percent in August 2021. This rate was 2.6 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 9.1 percent. The labor force was 1,407,113, up 66,805 (+5.0 percent) over the year. There were 91,827 unemployed residents in the region.
  • Monroe County had the lowest unemployment rate (3.0 percent) in the CareerSource South Florida region followed by Miami-Dade County (6.7 percent).
  • In August 2021 nonagricultural employment in the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall Metropolitan Division was 1,158,700, an increase of 68,000 jobs (+6.2 percent) over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality (+29,600 jobs); professional and business services (+17,600 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+10,500 jobs); financial activities (+5,500 jobs); other services (+4,000 jobs); education and health services (+2,300 jobs); government (+1,700 jobs); and information (+500 jobs).

State of Florida Unemployment Data

  • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August 2021 was 5.0 percent, down 0.1 percentage point from the July 2021 rate, and down 2.9 percentage points from a year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in August.
  • There were 529,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,543,000.
  • Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,777,200 in August 2021, an increase of 15,500 jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. The state gained 377,700 jobs over the year, an increase of 4.5 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 4.3 percent over the year.
  • The August 2021 total nonagricultural employment has not reached the pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.
